What To Do In A Dental Emergency in Mesa, AZ

Dental Emergency in Mesa, AZ?

Don’t let a dental emergency blindside you. Find out what to do fast!

A true dental emergency can be a stressful situation. But before you panic know that our Mesa, AZ emergency dentist, Dr. Julee Weidner, is ready to help. Fortunately, most dental emergencies that are treated right away will be just fine. Time is of the essence when it comes to protecting your oral health so if you are dealing with any of these dental emergencies you need to come in right away for care:

  • Dental pain
  • Partially dislodged or knocked out tooth
  • Loose permanent tooth
  • Cracked or chipped tooth
  • A puncture or soft tissue wound
  • Broken braces or dental restorations

Tooth Pain

You may not think much of your dental pain at first. In fact, you may even try to ignore it, but don’t! A toothache could mean that you have a cavity or infection. The sooner you seek treatment the better.

Dental problems will often just get worse until they are taken care of. While a trip to our Mesa dental office should definitely be the first thing on your to-do list, you can also apply cold compresses and take over-the-counter pain relievers to ease your symptoms until you get to our office.

Knocked out Tooth

Nothing seems more stressful than losing a permanent tooth. If this happens to you, call us right away. If you can get treated within one hour of the injury we may be able to re-implant the tooth and save your smile.

Remember to always handle the tooth by the crown (never the roots), clean it off gently with water and, if you can, try and place it back into the socket (if you can’t, place the tooth between the cheek and the gums and head right to our office).

Loose Tooth

If your tooth is loose and tilted to one side, try to lightly move it back into place. Then it’s time to contact your Mesa general dentist immediately.

Fractured Tooth

Fractured, chipped or cracked teeth also require immediate care to make sure that the weakened tooth doesn’t get worse. While some fractures can be severe enough to require a tooth extraction, most damaged teeth can be fixed by placing a dental crown over it to restore its full function and shape.

Injury to Soft Tissue

Biting your lip, cheeks or gum so hard that you bleed can be startling. Try to stop the bleeding by applying pressure to the area using gauze or a towel. If the bleeding doesn’t stop after about 15 minutes, you may require stitches.

Damaged Braces and Restorations

If a wire or a bracket has broken on your braces or a dental crown has cracked, these are all issues that need to be fixed right away. By not getting broken braces fixed you risk delaying your treatment’s progress. Broken restoration will also need to be repaired or replaced as soon as possible.
